NBA Trade Deadline Analysis: Houston Rockets trade Donatus Motiejunas and Marcus Thornton to Detroit Pistons for first-round pick (protected 1-8) and Joe Anthony

Grading the deal:

For the Pistons:
We’re going to assume for the purpose of this analysis that the back issues that have plagued Motiejunas are not a long-term concern for Detroit and the Pistons are convinced he will be able to return soon (he hasn’t played since December).

If so, this is a solid move for Stan Van Gundy, who is on quite a roll. Motiejunas is a versatile 7-footer that can score inside and out. He is good in the post, has range and is fine on the boards and defensively. Another nice piece to put beside Andre Drummond and Reggie Jackson (coupled with the addition of Tobias Harris).

If the Pistons falter and don’t make the playoffs, the pick is protected in case it is a very good one. Most likely, it will be a 11-19 selection, which is fine, this draft is not considered deep. Thornton also can help, he’s an improved defender from his earlier days and can heat up quickly.

Grade: B

For the Rockets:
This deal returns Houston a first-rounder and a shot to replace Motiejunas, who was extremely useful when he played. Without him, the team struggled and while his absence isn’t the only reason, it’s a little surprising that the Rockets gave him up. Still, they get a pick that probably is a bit higher than the 20th selection they used on him a few years ago, and can pay Terrence Jones as a restricted free agent instead of both of them.
The dollar savings will please ownership and the health issues have been frustrating.

Grade: C
